This is not just any nice, small hotel in a seaside resort town in Southern California. Built in 1913,
The Colonial is a historic hotel in La Jolla. Actually, the rest of La Jolla grew up around it. In painting this little jewel, I thought the blue-white dome canopies against yellow walls were so charming.
I learned that there used to be a drugstore inside the Colonial, complete with an ice cream parlor. It was very popular with locals. Incidentally, I had a daily painting of
Spanish Steps (Rome, Italy) yesterday and mentioned Gregory Peck in the Roman Holiday movie. Well, Peck grew up in La Jolla before moving to Hollywood. The pharmacist who worked in the hotel's drugstore was his father.
