"If by chance you have a heart and a shirt, sell the shirt to see the surroundings of Lake Maggiore"
- Stendhal
Lake Maggiore charmed me just like it did many people including the famous 19th century French author. In 1817, Stendhal wrote, "Nothing in the world can compare to the fascination of these ardent days of summer spent on the lakes ... in the chestnut woods, so green they seem to have immersed their boughs in the water."
This view is one of the towns we passed by to the south of Stresa. The blue water looked so quiet while the arrangement of town houses looked a little chaotic. I was so amused by the contrast when I painted this piece. This is one of the reasons why I never get tired of painting Italy.
