USS Midway (SD100-15)
Sail boats, cruise ships, cargo ships, sea gulls, and pelicans... must be things one might expect to see in a painting of San Diego Bay. But it is hard not to notice naval ships here because of strong military presence in San Diego. One of them, USS Midway came to San Diego as her final resting place.
This painting shows one side of the decommissioned Midway, a huge aircraft carrier from the World War II era. After years of sailing around the world, she now welcomes visitors as a museum. A while ago, I was invited (as a Japanese living in San Diego) to a joint concert on the ship's flight deck. Bands from the US Navy and the Japan Self-Defense Force performed popular pieces from both countries in front of a large audience as a sign of friendship. It was then that I thought I had to paint this ship some day.
