San Diego 100 (#13) - Mission Bay, California Lanscape Painting

Mission Bay (SD100-13)

Mission Bay is the largest man-made aquatic park in the country and, without doubt, it is a playground for many residents and visitors in San Diego.

I was commissioned to do this painting by a collector who wanted "something very California or very San Diego."  She chose a spot named Sunset Point within the Mission Bay Park.

As for a composition of the painting, I thought it wouldn't be so hard as it looked pretty simple with lots of vertical lines (palms) crisscrossing the horizon and the bridge.  But what would be the best way for me to depict the mood of this place?  After all, it is Sunset Point and must be a perfect place to see the sunset.  So it made sense to me to let the shadows and silhouettes speak of this place.  I also put some texture in the foreground to add more interest and depth.
