Downtown (SD100-12)
How to arrange light and dark areas often determines whether or not a painting has a certain feel. One of the reasons I like painting urban streets is because tall buildings are like trees in a jungle, making the interplay of light and shadows very interesting - and challenging to tackle. So what's the best way to handle this? Some artists do a lot of preliminary work before painting, such as thumbnail sketches and photo alterations with Photoshop to arrive at the best design of light and dark. Maybe I am too impatient but I don't do these things. Once I am inspired enough, I just dive in and rely on the initial inspiration to guide me through the process. But what an elusive idea that is because it escapes me so easily if I am not really focused.
