This canal runs in the center of the town of Izumo. Izumo has been known for centuries as the land of deities and myths. An ancient gazetteer from the 8th century documents local life and customs of the time period and tells legends of deities.
People in Izumo believe to this day that in the month of November all the shinto gods gather here, and they welcome the gods with festivities. Knowing that, I was really looking forward to visiting this town. My expectation was perfectly met on the day of my visit. When the misty rain fell softly and the mountains were under a slow-moving shroud of fog, I felt an overwhelming sense of awe.
