In Kyoto, my hometown, there are so many temples, shrines, gardens and sights that represent Japan's traditional beauty, but no place is as peaceful and scenic as Arashiyama in western Kyoto.
With lush mountains and rivers, the Arashiyama area has always attracted people who marveled at the breath-taking views of quite different colors in each season. Boating along the gorge was a favorite pastime of the Heian court. Today many visitors go there to have the same experience, a tradition that dates back to the 9th century.
