San Diego 100 (#80) - Carmel Valley, California Landscape Painting
by Keiko Tanabe on 10/17/2009 4:19:49 AM

Carmel Valley (SD100-80)
Before the current recession hit, rapid population growth added many new local communities in and around San Diego.  They literally kept sprouting like mushrooms after the rain.  Housing developments were happening no matter where we looked, and sprawling hills, farms or any open space seemed to have been converted very quickly to residential neighborhoods and office compounds.

Carmel Valley in the northwestern corner of San Diego has so many new homes built within its boundaries in the last decade or so.  I still remember just 12 or 13 years ago much of Carmel Valley was more rustic with horse ranches and farms characterizing the area landscape.  They are mostly gone now.

Today's painting shows a major feeder road that links Carmel Valley to Interstate 5.  Heading westward, drivers can go up and down this road that also intersects I-5, towards the Pacific Ocean.  Shining sea is only behind the hills in the distance.

Here's how I painted:

wow- I had a feeling it would begin to look like this once growth took off. I can still picture that valley in my mind - how it used to look....Part of me thinks- "what a shocker"...but then again - I'm not surprised (but a bit sad) at the tremendous growth in that area. Northern VA - same sort of thing...and the traffic....just crazy!

Hi Keiko,

I saw this on FB and clicked on it to send it to my son-in-law who lives in San Diego. My daughter and SIL like art and I thought they would enjoy your San Diego series.

Anyway.... Your blog came up...... with all these links to twitter, etc. I couldn't share it with them in the usual FB way....

Wanted to know how you posted it to make it work that way.

Always love your work!

I think your feelings are shared by many long-time residents here, Roxanne, but the new becomes old and familiar, and it's getting harder and harder to picture how it used to be. Marian, on FB, my blog post is hooked up with NetworkedBlog so a click there will bring you here. I believe you can click on "Share It" icon to send it within FB. Thank you for introducing my San Diego 100 series to your daughter's family. And thank you, both, for your kind comments!

Keiko, I like your work and thanks so much for sharing your technique in the highway painting. Isn't Fine Arts Studio a wonderful avenue for we, as artists to showcase our work?

Have an awesome week. JerryLynne

Thank you, JerryLynne, for your visit. I can't agree with you more. Having my website with FineArtStudioOnline (www.fineartstudioonline.com) is the best thing I've done as a today's artist. Happy painting!
