Albi's Native Son (French Landscape Painting)
by Keiko Tanabe on 9/12/2009 1:34:03 AM

Albi, France V
While I enjoy making a series of paintings about one place or subject for days at a stretch, I hop from one to another quite frequently (You've probably noticed it if you follow my daily painting blog).  I've been working on Albi, a town in the southwest of France, in the last several days, but I don't think I should move on to a next place without mentioning Albi's most famous person, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Quite a few visitors to the red town (Albi La Rouge) are fans of this artist from the Post-Impressionist period and they head to the Museum built in his name.  Although the museum was crowded on the day I was there, I found myself alone standing in front of the Toulouse-Lautrec family house.  It is still there, on a narrow alley near the town center.  Born into an aristocratic family, he was often ill and lived a very short life.

Today's painting is a street where Toulouse-Lautrec's life began in 1864.  I painted it as a tribute to this artist whose legacy still touches us.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born here (house on the left) in Albi.

This is a good painting! I wanted to ask a few questions.

Do you compose your shots or just point and shoot?

At what time of the day do you prefer to take photos?

Do you do sketches first to compose the painting or paint straightaway!

Hi Ramesh, thanks for following my blog! Well, when I travel, I probably take 100-200 pictures a day and I do so whenever an inspiration hits me. In a way, I may already see a painting when I shoot. I may or may not do a little sketch on the spot. I use my photos for reference to a varying degree, and I enjoy the freedom of changing things (objects, colors, values, etc.) when I design my painting. Hope I answered your questions. Happy painting!
