While I enjoy making a series of paintings about one place or subject for days at a stretch, I hop from one to another quite frequently (You've probably noticed it if you follow my daily painting blog). I've been working on Albi, a town in the southwest of France, in the last several days, but I don't think I should move on to a next place without mentioning Albi's most famous person, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Quite a few visitors to the red town (Albi La Rouge) are fans of this artist from the Post-Impressionist period and they head to the Museum built in his name. Although the museum was crowded on the day I was there, I found myself alone standing in front of the Toulouse-Lautrec family house. It is still there, on a narrow alley near the town center. Born into an aristocratic family, he was often ill and lived a very short life.
Today's painting is a street where Toulouse-Lautrec's life began in 1864. I painted it as a tribute to this artist whose legacy still touches us.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born here (house on the left) in Albi.
