San Clemente Canyon (SD100-70)
This place is known in San Diego as Marian Bear Memorial Park. I've been here many times to walk, relax or paint, and every time I have a good time, thanks to Ms. Bear. Just minutes from downtown and so close to a major freeway, this park is amazingly quiet. It almost feels like a place somewhere miles away in the countryside. A walk on a trail under oak and sycamore trees, among coastal sage scrubs, hearing birds sing, is a much-needed respite from a busy life.
This is also popular among plein-air painters. We can find a landscape that resembles the one from early days when Native Americans lived here. What a joy to be able to paint it! If Ms. Bear hadn't fought hard against plans to build a highway on the canyon floor back in the '70's, we wouldn't be so lucky today.
