No, the title is not a mistake. This view may be a far cry from popular images of Pacific Beach or PB as it's known in San Diego. Miles of sandy beaches, palm trees, surfers, rollerbladers, the boardwalk, the nightlife... these may be main reasons people visit this beach community. But hidden on a hillside overlooking the Mission Bay and the city of San Diego is a beautiful park with stunning views bearing the name of a famous horticulturist.
Kate Sessions Park must be one of the best-kept secrets as some long-time San Diegans say they have never been there or never heard of it.
Originally from Northern California, Kate Sessions came to San Diego and made a huge contribution to the city's botanical landscape. According to Wikipedia, she made an agreement in 1892 with the city to plant 100 trees a year in Balboa Park in exchange for 30 acres to use as a nursery. As a result, the Balboa Park now has cypress, pine, oaks, pepper trees and eucalyptus planted from seeds she imported from all over the world. She is also known for having popularized jacaranda trees in San Diego (See my jacaranda/San Diego painting and read related post
here).
