The minute I saw this view from a hillside in Point Loma, I wanted to paint it. First of all, it is a breath-taking panoramic view of the city of San Diego with a hazy skyline of high-rises in the distance. It is also something that shows the passage of time in the history of San Diego, and I felt compelled to record it as it looks today.
A group of buildings with orange roofs used to be the Naval Training Center (NTC). From the 1920s till its closing in 1997, thousands of Navy recruits lived and trained here, providing stories to San Diego's rich military history.
Now the NTC officially closed, the land and the buildings have been redeveloped and renovated to create a new community called Liberty Station. It is designed to be a major arts & culture/commercial/residential site in San Diego. Liberty Station is also a new home of the San Diego Watercolor Society (
