La Casa del Caffe, Rome, Italy, Italian Landscape Painting
by Keiko Tanabe on 8/8/2009 1:19:39 AM

La Casa del Caffe, Rome
This coffee house, near the Pantheon in the heart of Rome, must be famous or their coffee must be real good as there was a constant stream of people coming in and out.  But to me, what was intriguing was a fleeting moment I happened to catch at the time I was there:  A couple hurriedly walked in this coffee house (They must be anxious to get the shop's popular espresso).  Old ladies were shooting the breeze at the corner (They must be neighbors, perhaps gossiping).  A group of students with backpacks were quite noisy (They must have just visited the Pantheon on a school field trip).  Buildings on both sides of this narrow alley had faded paint colors (They probably have been like this for who knows how long)...  Just a slice of daily life.  Nothing spectacular or noteworthy but the moment was captured in this painting.

in my opinion what you capture in your paintings is nostalgia. its those fleeting memories that come to your mind maybe years later when for example you smell a certain kind of coffee or hear a particular piece of music. an image follows and fleeting memories of a time and place are brought back. you may find in time there is more to these experiences as a pattern can build up as your sixth sense makes use of what initially seemed as non events. your work although real is also dreamlike and momentary.

Dan, I appreciate your very insightful comment. It is indeed my hope that what I paint will prove to be more than a recording of the present time or event. Thank you also for your kind words about my work.

What Dan says is true. The smell of fresh coffee truly might inspire the memory of the place. But it works the other way, too. When I see this painting, I smell the coffee in my mind. It seems as real as it did one day when I sat at the little coffee bar just through the door on the right of the painting - one of my best memories of Rome. Now that's a good painting!

Hi Mike, I appreciate very much you sharing your travel memory associated with this place. You make me want to run to Tazza d'Oro for a nice cup of espresso! It is indeed my honor to know how you feel about this painting. Thank you.
