I painted another street scene of the Fushimi sake production district (click
here to see the other painting). More than 30 breweries are in operation in this district in Kyoto. The scene I painted here probably hasn't changed much for 400 years.
These wooden buildings with white walls are all breweries where many brands of well-known sake are made. Some of them offer a tour - a great place to sample this traditional Japanese alcoholic drink and to learn 400-year-old history of sake making.
One of the popular breweries has a very unique museum inside dedicated to
kappa, a legendary water creature that often appears in Japanese folklore as a kind of sprite. Because
kappa is believed to be living only in clean water, it suggests the goodness of water available for sake made in Fushimi.
