Gion is a geisha district that is a short stroll from
Yasaka Shrine (a.k.a. Gion Shrine).
In this historic neighborhood of several blocks, traditional wooden townhouses line the narrow streets. Many are high-end Japanese restaurants or exclusive tea houses where geishas entertain their guests.
It was rather quiet when I was there, but this area is almost always crowded with tourists from all over the world, hoping to catch a sight of a geisha in her beautiful kimono and elaborate make-up. But they are as elusive as the blue rose...
