About This Painting:
Piazza del Duomo, the most important square in the heart of Milan, is always crowded with locals, tourists and pigeons. In the middle stands a statue of Vittorio Emanuele II, " father of the fatherland."
With the Duomo (cathedral) on one side, the square is surrounded by other elegant buildings such as the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (shopping arcade) and the Royal Palace. Since this square is vehicle-free, we can look up and be dazzled by the sheer beauty and the grand scale of the Duomo without worrying about the traffic.
As the evening approaches after a long day, the top of the buildings are now receiving the last rays of summer sun. And pigeons are enjoying the last meal of the day before flying up to the nearby buildings to rest. And the square that has seen thousands of people coming and going all day will finally be quite down a little bit.
