I have to admit I am not really big on colors most of the time but this painting was about colors.
From the very start, I wanted to use all colors that I had on my palette: cobalt blue, ultramarine, cerulean blue, prussian blue, turquoise, raw sienna, burnt sienna, burnt umber, cad red, cad orange, gamboge, alizarin crimson ... The question I kept asking when I painted this was "which color next?"
It was fun to let the colors sing but this approach was a bit unusual for me.
Usually I do try to stay true to the colors I see in a landscape, but colors are only "in the back of my mind" kind of thing when I paint. Instead, I often find myself thinking more in terms of "dark/light" and "warm/cool."
