About This Painting:
Gondoliers - masterful navigators on the waters of Venice. If canals of Venice are a concert hall, gondoliers are like a frontman or a lead singer who sings the heart and soul of its water music.
Many of us have the image of gondoliers being good singers. Some gondoliers do sing well although there are those who don't. So, if they don't, what do they do? I don't know how true this is but when a woman asked a gondolier if he sings, he replied, "Madame, there are the lovers and there are the singers. I do not sing (from
Rick Steves website)."
