Yesterday I received an email that said, "We are in a position to offer oil painting to you with excellent quality and competitive price. Image of works will be sent for your reference if you need. Thank you." A little background check revealed that the sender was from China. I suspect it came from one of those factories where factory workers/artists copy illegally original works of other artists. I am not interested in having copies of my works made (and in oils!).
Reproducing or re-painting one's own work is a different issue, however. Once in a while I get asked if I have reproductions of my paintings. Out of thousands of originals, I have made giclee prints of five of them so far at the request of my customers. Sometimes I get asked to paint the same or similar subject by my customers. Sometimes I paint the old subject when I get the urge to do it again although this rarely happens.
This painting of a panoramic view from the edge of town of Arezzo, Italy, is a "repeat" of a much larger work I did a few years ago (Tuscan Morning, Vist; 18 x 28.75 in.). Last week I was looking at my digital images of my trip to Tuscany and the mood of this place hit me, again. Not quite remembering how I approached my previous painting of this scene, I felt fresh in doing this version.
Words of wisdom from Canadian artist
Robert Genn on resurrection: "You have to look at the project with new eyes. When you take this approach, you'll find the resurrected one may have a fresher spin than in its previous life. Always ask 'What could be?' An artist's personal evolution is a playground of unending curiosity and abiding strength... Resurrection is part of our game, but it can be a tricky wicket."
