It happened to be a market day when we were in Santa Margherita Ligure, a charming seaside town on the Italian Riviera near Portofino. There were modest-looking tents on the town square and vendors were displaying fruits and vegetables in all colors.
From alleys leading to the square, ladies started arriving with a shopping bag in hand. Some looked dressed very nicely, in cardigan and skirt, with their hair perfectly coiffed.
Buildings in this town are strikingly colorful. Facades in warm colors (pink, orange, yellow, burgundy, peachy...) with green or blue shutters are simply a visual delight.
To paint this alley with a lady shopper, I simplified everything I saw in order to get the essence of the atmosphere of a backstreet of Santa Margherita Ligure on a sunny morning.
