I was sad to hear the news of a deadly earthquake in central Italy last week.
I love Italy, have friends there, and have countless good memories from travels in the country. So I've felt I had to do something to help. I also grew up in Japan where earthquakes are so common that I understand what it means to be living in an earthquake-prone region.
Since the 6.3-magnitude tremor on April 6 in the town of L'Aquila, several aftershocks have hit the area. Hundreds were killed, thousands were injured, tens of thousands were left homeless.
I was immediately reminded of the 1997 quake that severely damaged the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, which is not so far from L'Aquila. After a long restoration effort, the church is open again.
In the hope of helping the people affected by the last week's disaster, I'd like to donate all proceeds from the sale of this painting of Assisi. If you're interested, please email me the amount you'd like to pay for this painting (starting price $100). Bidding ends midnight Monday, April 13. I will send this painting (retail value over $300) to the highest bidder and donate all proceeds to
American Red Cross International Response Fund to help with the L'Aquila Earthquake recovery process.
